A self-driving bus is set to launch in Belfast in the coming weeks, transporting passengers between Titanic train halt and Catalyst Science Park in the Titanic Quarter. Known as the Harlander, the service will initially operate with a safety operator on board, aiming to become fully autonomous by 2029.
Meanwhile, Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has addressed questions about the introduction of self-driving taxis in Northern Ireland. Responding to SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan, she confirmed that Northern Ireland lacks the legislative framework needed to trial fully autonomous vehicles without human drivers — a key difference from Great Britain, where such a pilot is due to begin in 2026 under the new Automated Vehicles Act.
“There is no such framework here,” Kimmins said, but noted her department will monitor developments in England closely.
While GB prepares for a future with driverless taxis on public roads, Northern Ireland remains some distance away from similar technology becoming a reality.

A judge has ruled against the long-delayed £1.7bn A5 road project, citing breaches of Northern Ireland’s climate change targets and a lack of information. It marks the third time in 18 years the scheme has been overturned in court.
The legal challenge was brought by the Alternative A5 Alliance, a group of landowners who said they feel vindicated by the decision. The ruling halts plans to proceed with the 58-mile (94km) route, which received renewed approval from Stormont ministers last October.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said she is “not giving up” on delivering a safer A5, noting the road’s poor safety record—over 50 deaths since 2006. Campaign group Enough is Enough called the judgement disappointing but acknowledged there were “some positives.”
The A5 forms a key cross-border route connecting Donegal and Derry to Dublin, passing through Strabane, Omagh and Aughnacloy.

Parking Restrictions
News Upload Date: 3rd October, 2024
The Department of Infrastructure treats vehicles parked in contravention of parking restrictions very seriously with Traffic Attendants employed across Northern Ireland to help keep traffic moving freely and safely. Parking on pavements is a particular area of concern. Drivers often mistakenly think they are doing the right thing by keeping the road clear but fail to consider the needs of people on the footway causing them inconvenience and often putting them in danger. This is a particular risk for people with disabilities, older people, children and people pushing prams who may have to go onto the road to get around the parked cars.
The restrictions that into force last year, aim to help address this issue by prohibiting parking wholly or partly on a footway at a number of specific locations. This includes footways adjacent to:
a bus lane;
the limits of any bus stop in a lay-by or any bus stop as delineated by markings on the carriageway at any time;
the limits of any bus stand in a lay-by or any bus stand as delineated by markings on the carriageway at any time;
the limits of any mandatory cycle lane as delineated by markings on the carriageway at any time; and
the limits of any mandatory school keep clear as delineated by markings on the carriageway at any time.
The Rule also revokes and re-enacts existing prohibitions on footways.
All vehicles found to be in breach of the new restrictions will receive a £90 Penalty Charge Notice, discounted to £45 if paid within 14 days.
Drivers are urged to abide by the new rules and to show consideration at all times when parking to ensure they are not causing an obstruction and inconvenience to others.

Road Closure
News Upload Date: 24th September, 2024
Belfast City Council will be conducting a site investigation works starting next Monday the 30th September for a period of 10 days (not including weekends) at Little Patrick Street. This will result in a formal road closure of Little Patrick Street which will be operational daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Traffic will be diverted with alternative route signage in place and delay of less than 5 minutes expected.
The purpose of the Site Investigation is to understand location of existing services and the type of ground beneath the surface to help provide design and construction information going forward. These works will entail digging trial and investigation pits along the carriageway but any areas that are disturbed will be reinstated.

Due to changes in our Programme of Works, and to ensure we’re allowing for the continual progress of groundwork installations, our tower crane is now scheduled to be dismantled on Sunday 30th June.
To allow for the crane to be dismantled, the York Street will be closed from 7am to 3pm on the following location: York Street - closure from junction with Frederick Street to junction with Little Patrick Street. The footpath will still be opened and will not affect pedestrian movements.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused by this task and will continue to work to minimise any disruption to our site's surrounding areas and community as we progress with the works. (Source: Daniel Oliveira, HSE & Sustainability Manager, Turkington)
